EASTER WEEK IN SAN SEBASTIÁN

At last! Only two days to go until Easter Week, and you can already feel those long-awaited holidays approaching at Hotel Parma, your hotel in the wonderful city of San Sebastián. This year, you’ll also witness something truly special—an event that has even taken locals by surprise.

Easter processions stopped taking place in San Sebastián back in 1966, and in 2026 they return for the first time since then. The revival of this religious tradition has been led by the Cofradía Jesús Nazareno, originally founded in 1927. The main procession will take place on Good Friday, April 3rd, starting at 8:30 pm from the Buen Pastor Cathedral (just a 15-minute walk from Hotel Parma). While much of the original heritage has been lost, the event will still feature the traditional figures of Jesús Nazareno, the recumbent Christ, and the Virgin of Sorrows.

This procession joins other traditional celebrations held during this time of year. In our very own neighbourhood, the Old Town, the Via Crucis to Mount Urgull will depart from Santa María Church at 7:30 am on Good Friday. Later that same day, around 9:00 pm, the Passion of Christ will be reenacted on Amara Street.

These are events well worth experiencing, regardless of their religious significance. And beyond these ceremonies, the options are endless.

Taking a walk around the outskirts of San Sebastián and enjoying a meal at a traditional cider house is an excellent plan, as cider season is still in full swing. For example, you could go hiking around Zubieta and dine at Iruin. If you prefer something more relaxed, you can stay closer to the hotel and enjoy a pintxos route through the Old Town. Taking the funicular up to Mount Igeldo is always a great experience, but if you’re feeling active, a walk up Mount Urgull or Ulia is also a fantastic choice. The city’s churches and landmarks are waiting to be explored—we especially recommend visiting the Peine del Viento after a stroll along La Concha beach. And if the weather is on your side, you might even enjoy some beach time and treat yourself to an ice cream afterwards!
