ST JOHN’S DAY IN SAN SEBASTIAN
On 24th June, Saint John’s Day is celebrated — a festival with ancient roots that blends religious and pagan traditions. Although it is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, its origins lie in pre-Christian solar rituals that marked the summer solstice and celebrated the triumph of light over darkness. Fire was — and still is — the central element of this magical night.
In the Basque Country, the night before (23rd June) is filled with bonfires, music and tradition. Jumping over the flames symbolises purification, renewal and good luck for the new cycle. In San Sebastián, neighbourhoods and squares light up, creating a unique atmosphere of celebration and spirituality.
From Hotel Parma, you can see the Zurriola Beach bonfires just a few minutes away!
