PHYLLIDA BARLOW

 In News

From 24th May 2023, Chillida Leku will host an exhibition by the late British artist Phyllida Barlow, the first presentation since the artist’s passing, which was organised with Barlow during her lifetime. The exhibition will bring together large-scale works, sculptures and works on paper in the 16th-century Zabalaga farmhouse.

The work of Eduardo Chillida had long held great significance for Barlow. In dialogue with the setting of Chillida Leku, her pieces will further expand the frontiers of study of Chillida’s work, which will be contextualized by Barlow’s ‘anti-monumental’ sculptures, made from materials such as cardboard, fabric, plywood and cement. Her constructions – which were often painted in vibrant colours – connect with Chillida’s work in their exploration of fundamental sculptural elements, such as gravity, mass and materiality, and in the intentional visible clues through which Barlow’s works reveal the process of their making.
