ASTE NAGUSIA 2026: A CELEBRATION OF LIGHT, COLOUR AND SOUND

From 8 to 15 August, San Sebastián comes alive for Big Week (Aste Nagusia), the city’s most eagerly awaited summer festival. For eight days, the streets are filled with music, entertainment and activities for all ages. Yet one event steals the spotlight every evening at 10:45 pm: the International Fireworks Competition, which draws thousands of spectators to La Concha Bay night after night.

Organised by Donostia Kultura and San Sebastián City Council, this year marks the 61st edition of one of the world’s most prestigious fireworks competitions. Since its first edition in 1964, leading pyrotechnic companies from around the globe have gathered here to showcase their creativity in spectacular displays. The official poster for 2026 captures the festive atmosphere that surrounds the fireworks and was designed by San Sebastián-based graphic designer Jorge Elósegui Astrain, from Estudio Primo.

In 2025, the coveted Golden Shell Award was won by Pirotecnia Valenciana, which returns this year to defend its title. The closing display on 15 August promises to be especially memorable, as Basque company Valecea celebrates its 150th anniversary with a very special performance.

There’s no better setting to enjoy the spectacle than La Concha Bay. The harbour, Paseo Nuevo, Alderdi Eder Gardens and La Concha Promenade are among the city’s finest viewing spots, where the night sky is transformed each evening into a dazzling display of light, colour and sound.
