WARMING UP THE DRUMS

 In News

The Tamborrada has its origin in 1836 and is the festival with which Donostia/San Sebastián celebrates the day of its patron saint every January 20. It emerged as a San Sebastián carnival troupe and soon after it began to be taken as a tradition to celebrate the patron saint by touring the streets of the city.

At first, the participants were dressed in costumes, but later they dressed up like those of the Gipuzkoa battalions that took part in the War of Independence, with a French style of military clothing. On San Sebastián Day it is practically impossible not to see any drums in the streets of San Sebastián, and more than 147 companies (made up of between 20-50 drummers and 50-100 barrels, accompanied by a music band, flag bearers and bartenders) ) give life to the city with their songs and dances.

“Gu beti pozez, gu beti alai!”

This January 20 will once again be a big day in Donostia/San Sebastián. We will celebrate with excitement the raising and lowering and we will enjoy the companies parading through our streets.
