On 23 June, San Juan Night returns, bringing light, music and a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere to the streets and neighbourhoods of the city.<\/p>\n
Fire is at the very heart of this celebration. Traditionally, bonfires symbolised the power of the sun and acted as a ritual of purification, helping people leave behind negative energy and welcome a new beginning. Among the best-known customs are jumping over the flames once the fire has started to die down, making wishes for the new cycle ahead, and gathering flowers and plants believed to bring protection and good fortune. The importance of fire is perfectly reflected in the celebration itself, which revolves around coming together around the bonfire.<\/p>\n
