SAN JUAN NIGHT, A MAGICAL NIGHT

The summer solstice is just around the corner, and in Donostia we are looking forward to being wrapped once again in that unmistakable scent of ash that signals the arrival of the most vibrant time of the year. On 23 June, San Juan Night returns, bringing light, music and a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere to the streets and neighbourhoods of the city.

Fire is at the very heart of this celebration. Traditionally, bonfires symbolised the power of the sun and acted as a ritual of purification, helping people leave behind negative energy and welcome a new beginning. Among the best-known customs are jumping over the flames once the fire has started to die down, making wishes for the new cycle ahead, and gathering flowers and plants believed to bring protection and good fortune. The importance of fire is perfectly reflected in the celebration itself, which revolves around coming together around the bonfire.

The main event takes place in Plaza de la Constitución, just a five-minute walk from Hotel Parma. There, the traditional ash tree is erected as the focal point of the city’s celebrations, while the Goizaldi dance group performs traditional Basque dances around it, including the Zortziko and the Gizon Dantza. The city’s neighbourhoods are equally involved in the festivities, many of them lighting their own bonfires. From Egia to Intxaurrondo, via Aiete, Antiguo and Sagüés, the glow of the flames illuminates different corners of Donostia as locals and visitors gather to share music, gastronomy and tradition.
